Silica
Gel Desiccants
What are they?
Desiccant sachets are small packets of desiccant clay, silica
gel, molecular sieve or other absorbent materials. They protect
goods from moisture, odours and some other harmful elements.
The Desiccant packets are available in singles, in reels designed
for automatic insertion and in a variety of sizes, ranging from
0.5 to 100 grams.
Types:
Desi
Pak® (bentonite clay)
- Dri-Pax® (silica gel)
- Odour-Sorb® (activated carbon)
- Dual-Sorb® (silica gel or bentonite clay and activated
carbon)
- Tri-Sorb® (molecular sieve).
Why use them?
Products vulnerable to moisture damage need special protection during
storage and transport to ensure that they remain effective. Desiccant
packets provide a simple, dependable and economical solution for
preventing moisture damage in small, sealed packages. A popular
desiccant configuration in the pharmaceutical industry, desiccant
packets are also ideal for protecting nutraceuticals, diagnostics,
electronics and food.
In addition to protecting products from moisture, desiccant packets
are also effective at absorbing odors and other elements from
the air.
Available configurations
ECP provides a wide range of both reeled and individual desiccant
packets. Sachets are available in continuous strips for automatic
insertion by machine. Desiccant sachets are wound on a reel for
automatic insertion.
Packaging
Desiccant packets are packaged in either Unbleached manila Hemp,
DuPont Tyvek® or GDT-II materials. These are strong, durable
and allow for extremely high absorption rates and comply with
FDA requirements for direct contact with food and drugs.

Ethylene Absorbers/Scavengers -
Everfresh (TM)
Everfresh
Ehylene Scavenger sachets extend the shelf life of fruits, vegetables
and flowers in a packaged or bulk environment by removing harmful
ethylene gas.
Ethylene gas is a naturally occuring ripening agent,
it causes fruits and vegetables to ripen & decay, and flowers
to wilt. While refrigeration & humidity control slow decay,
they don't halt the production of harmful Ethylene gas.
The sachets oxidise the ethylene with their active
ingredient, potassium permanganate, into carbon dioxide and water.
This chemical reaction oxidizes the pellets, converting them into
mangenese dioxide, this becomes an excellent timed released organic
fertilizer. The sachet contents are non-toxic, chemically inert
and can be disposed of as normal waste. The potassium permanganate
has an added benefit in that it has disinfecting capabilities
that result in spore (bacterial and fungal) reduction in air.
Everfresh ethylene scavengers are available in 5 and
10 grams sachets, with larger sizes available on request, in hi-strength
packaging to prevent tearing and product leakage. Also available
in custom sizes, artwork and packaging formats.
Everfresh Ethylene Scavenger Sachet Benefits:
- ELIMINATES decay, mould, discoloration, wilting, softening,
scald, loss of crunch and many other negative effects caused
by ethylene gas.
- Regulates ethylene in physiologically active in trace amounts
(less than 0.1 ppm).
- Absorbs ethylene immediately on packaging, before levels get
too high in the package.
- Sachets continue to work once the packaged fruit, even when
the package is removed from the cool chain, whereas other forms
of ethylene control are limited only while the product is actually
in the coolstore.
Typical applications
Ethylene Scavengers can be used with a wide variety of agricultural
products, including:
- Fruits - apples, kiwis, avocados, citrus, apples and melons.
- Vegetables - celery, broccoli, brussels sprouts and onions.
- Fresh
Undesirable Effects Of Ethylene
- Accelerated ripening and softening of fruits.
- Accelerated senescence and loss of green colour in some immature
fruits.
- Russet spotting on lettuce.
- Formation of bitter principle (isocoumarin) in carrots.
- Induction of stress metabolites ie isomeamarone in sweet potatoes.
- Sprouting of potatoes - either stimulation or retardation
depending on concentration and duration of exposure to Ethylene.
- Abscission of leaves.
- Toughening of asparagus.
- Abbreviated storage life and reduced quality of cut flowers.
- Physiological disorders in flowering bulbs.
- Inhibits the development of immature flower bulbs. Causes
partial / complete flower abortion.
- Causes growth abnormalities such as excessive leafiness and
stimulated growth of daughter bulbs.
- Retards the growth of the plant.
